What should a “book deal” really look like?

A book publishing deal…the dream sounds wonderful in your head, right?

Read on and maybe learn a few things!

When you think of a traditional book deal, what comes to your mind?

If you’re like most writers, you’re thinking:

  • large payment advance — maybe it will be $1,000,000!
  • becoming a best-seller
  • front shelf and end cap exposure in all major stores
  • celebrity status
  • royalties on book sales making you rich!

Well, there’s good news…and bad news.

The good news is that current celebrities and authors who have previously sold millions of copies of books likely do get deals like this. And they should… because goals 1 -10 for traditional publishing companies are to make $$$. So, they are going to bet on the horse they know will win. That means they make $$$.

However, these writers are less than .01% of all published authors.

Which means, unfortunately, aspiring authors with hopes and dreams of being the next John Grisham or J.K. Rowling are left to submitting manuscripts and proposals to dozens, if not hundreds, of literary agents and publishers. And hear only crickets in return.

I’ve known a few people who thought they were getting a great book deal—fellow professional speakers mostly, but others too.

Come to find out the book deal they were so excited about actually took away everything they had worked so hard to achieve. When they signed the contract,

  • they signed over their rights to the book.
  • the publisher completely changed their book.
  • they were assigned a 10% royalty90% of the retail revenue went to services and middlemen.
  • they had to pay $12+ for their own (250 page, black and white) book.
  • they lost all control over their book.
  • they were not allowed sell the book on their own.
  • they were given a performance agreement requiring them to sell a certain number of books each month.
  • they were told thatmore editing was required before publishing the book and that editing was a pricy number per word.

…I could keep going, but you get the point.

BAD NEWS/SAD NEWS is that I’ve yet to meet a first-time author who was happy with their traditional book deal. It was never a deal once they read the contract. Unfortunately, most were so excited about the contract that they overlooked the small print that stated they were signing their rights away, among other things.

The GOOD NEWS is that there is at least one publisher out there who wants you to keep:

  • 100% of your royalties
  • 100% of your intellectual property
  • the U.S. and foreign rights to your book
  • and who wants to help you every step of the way to your publishing goal.

Write Way Publishing Company was established to help writers early in their writing career bypass the scary parts of book publishing. Write Way Publishing helps authors take full advantage of a new era of publishing.

Now with amazing print-on-demand (POD) technology, aspiring authors can publish print and digital books as independent authors (also called indie authors) and retain full control of their work. However, authors still must take care—there are publishers out there in this arena as well who offer a “deal” that isn’t really a deal.

Here at Write Way Publishing, we are transparent. We show you everything up front and in advance. We’ll talk with you to ensure your every question is answered. And it’s easy to read our small print because we don’t have any! We keep the language simple and the points clear.
